Teak Direct -- About TeakSustainable Management: All of the teak that goes into Teak Direct products comes from teak plantations owned and managed by the Indonesian government. None of the teak comes from primary or "old growth" forests. Further, the teak is managed in a sustainable manner to ensure the resource is sustained for generations to come.Teak wood and staining: Teak is a tropical wood that has a very high natural oil content. As such, it is not necessary to stain your teak furniture. All of our hand crafted outdoor teak furniture comes sanded and unfinished. You can leave your teak furniture as is, or apply a stain if you like. Staining will highlight the beautiful grain in teak furniture, but is only used for aesthetic reasons. Unstained teak furniture will last just as long as stained teak furniture and will quickly develop a silvery patina. Our indoor teak furniture is stained as many of the pieces are antiques (in their original form) or made from "old wood". This is a traditional Indonesian technique whereby old teak furniture is carefully disassembled and then rebuilt into new pieces of furniture. Other pieces of our indoor teak furniture are made from new wood and you have a choice of natural, light or dark stain. Please ask for more details on the wood used and the stain available if it is not clear from the on-line catalogue. Unstained indoor teak furniture is also available on request if made from new wood. Our cafe teak furniture comes unstained or with a choice of light to dark stains and a protective coating to enhance the durability and life of the stain. Storage: In colder climates it is advisable to store your outdoor teak furniture indoors, if possible, during winter - particularly if it snows. As with any wood, a cold, dry climate can lead to splitting. If your area is prone to long cold, dry winters and you can't put your teak furniture indoors then try to increase the humidity near the furniture if possible. Surface cracks: Teak, like all wood, may develop small splits or cracks over time. This is due to changes in weather and the wood's natural process of releasing and absorbing water from the air. These surface cracks will not affect the durability or strength of your teak furniture. |
