Their objectives were as follows:

1. Find a reliable manufacturer of high quality, well designed teak furniture;

2. Work directly with the craftsmen/women and NOT local brokers - to ensure the appropriate people were fully paid for their efforts;

3. Ensure the teak used was from a sustainably managed plantation and that no old growth forests were harvested;

4. Ensure all materials were good quality (eg. teak wood, brass hardware, etc.) and would remain as such; and

5. Streamline all systems to keep overheads low to ensure delivery of high quality products at the lowest possible prices to retailers and other high volume buyers in North America, Europe, etc.

Having achieved these goals and successfuly completing delivery of the first few containers to Europe and North America, a decision was made to expand the company driven by a business-to-business (B2B) web site.

Throughout all aspects of Teak Direct's business the aim is to continually improve the approach to Sustainability by ensuring environmental performance, protecting the health & safety and economic welfare of the manufacturers and the community in which they operate, and providing excellent value to all buyers - thus creating a win-win situation for all involved.

At the same time Teak Direct strives to minimize impacts on the environment. For example:

1) the company does not print a color catalogue - the web site serves as the only catalogue;
2) energy consumption is minimized by shipping directly from the manufacturer to you the buyer; and
3) Teak Direct and it's associates work with the manufacturer to ensure they minimize all waste and avoid wherever possible hazardous and toxic chemicals.

Of course, this also means lower costs that can then be passed on to you - the buyer.

Teak Direct endeavours to maximize the social benefits of it's efforts, again, by avoiding middlemen or brokers wherever possible and paying a fair price directly to those responsible for the handcrafting of our beautiful furniture.
